How To Plan A Hiking Scavenger Hunt
There is no right or wrong way to plan an outdoor scavenger hunt and they are easily one of the best activities for hiking with kids!
It doesn’t need to be fancy either. You can create your own scavenger hunt list of things you likely see on your hike, which can be as simple as writing a list of items on a piece of paper and having each person tick them off alone or by working together as a family or group.
Better still, plan ahead and grab our free printable nature scavenger hunt instead and take it with you!
Establish rules before you start your scavenger hunt – decide if you want participants to work together or work individually. It’s also important to set boundaries on staying on the trail and not wandering off alone. You want to make sure younger kids are staying safe and within your line of sight at all times on a hike.
Make it easy! Make sure you bring enough pencils or pens for each person, with a few spare in case some snap or don’t work.
Clipboards are a good idea too! You can print these scavenger hunts at 2 or 4 to a page and use mini clipboards, which are a lighter option to carry when you hike. This way each person has a sturdy base for ticking off the items on the list.
Decide if there will be rewards. You can offer up a small reward for the first person to complete their entire list (or whoever gets the most ticked off), or have a little something for everyone who participates.
It’s not essential but can add to the fun and sometimes knowing there’s a reward at the end of a hike is motivation enough for kids!
